The Winter Olympics figure skating competition has been hit by a wave of drama, from damaged equipment to controversial judging, leaving athletes and fans frustrated. A significant issue arose following the team event medal ceremony, where the very podium designed to celebrate champions inadvertently caused damage to athletes’ skates. This incident has led to an official complaint being lodged by the Japanese team, highlighting a significant oversight in the Games’ infrastructure.
The issue centres on the anti-slip surface of the podium used for medal ceremonies. According to reports, several skaters from the United States, Japan, and Italy experienced damage to their blades after stepping onto the podium. Unlike traditional ceremonies where blades are often covered for protection, the podium at these Games is situated directly on the ice. This means medallists must skate onto it to receive their accolades, exposing their delicate blades to the surface.
Marco Fabbrim, a member of the Italian team, described the unsettling experience. “We didn’t realise once we were on the podium that there was something weird about the surface of the podium,” he stated. “There were some small stones, almost. We couldn’t feel it on the podium. But then as soon as we we stepped down (onto the ice) everyone was like, ‘I cannot move anymore, I cannot slide anymore.’ It was like the same feeling as having some glue under the blade. And so today we had to sharpen the blade. So it was a little bit stressful.”
The Milano Cortina Organising Committee acknowledged the problem in a statement, confirming that the anti-slip surface of the podium had caused damage to the athletes’ skates during the Figure Skating Team Event medal ceremony. They assured that steps are being taken to replace the surface to prevent any recurrence.
To mitigate the impact on athletes’ preparations, and in consultation with the International Skating Union (ISU), the Organising Committee has:
Furthermore, the Committee noted that some National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have generously offered their own services to athletes from other countries, showcasing a commendable display of the Olympic spirit.
Adding to the day’s drama, the rhythm dance segment saw a surprising upset that left many fans incensed. French ice dancers Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier Beaudry surged to an unexpected lead over three-time world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the United States. The scores, when announced, led to audible boos from the crowd, indicating a strong sentiment that the American pair had been unfairly judged.
Chock and Bates, who were considered favourites, made a minor error during their pattern step. This slight imperfection proved costly, as it resulted in them trailing the French duo by a mere 0.46 points heading into the free dance finals.
Despite the setback, Madison Chock remained resolute. “The game is always on. You should know us by now,” she commented after the performance. “We’re not changing anything. We’ve got this locked in, locked in where we know ourselves, know our routine. And yeah, we’ve got this.”
Social media platforms became a battleground for divided opinions. Many fans expressed outrage, claiming the American skaters had been “robbed” of their lead. Conversely, others defended the judges’ decision, arguing that the French pair had delivered a slightly superior performance on the night. The close margin between the two leading pairs promises an electrifying conclusion to the figure skating competition.
