Scotty’s Italian Dance Reign: Love Actually’s Star Power

Scotty James: Australia’s Snowboarding King Aiming for Olympic Gold in Livigno

As the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics draw closer, the name Scotty James is becoming synonymous with Australian sporting excellence. For anyone from Down Under attending the Games, a common question is likely to be, “Did you see the Love Actually dance?” This playful display, a viral sensation, encapsulates the infectious personality that has propelled the 31-year-old snowboarder from a prodigious talent to a global superstar.

James has had a season for the ages, culminating in a dominant performance at the X-Games last month. This cemented his status as the overwhelming favourite to claim a career-defining Olympic gold medal in the snowboard halfpipe, an event set to take place in the picturesque Italian alpine village of Livigno. He stands as one of the brightest stars at a Games brimming with talent, and the sentiment in Italy is that this is his moment to shine. In the past six months, his profile has exploded, transcending the niche world of winter sports to capture mainstream attention. Beyond his marriage to a billionaire heiress and his Netflix documentary, a significant part of his broad appeal lies in the enduring perception that he remains the same relatable Scotty James who first burst onto the international scene at the tender age of 14. His penchant for spontaneous, childlike fun, like the Love Actually dance, is a recurring theme.

These viral social media moments are more than just an authentic glimpse into his personality; they are the foundational elements of ‘Scotty James Inc.’, a venture he’s built with his brothers. In high-pressure environments like the Olympics, these lighthearted moments can also serve as a crucial pressure release valve.

Make no mistake, the halfpipe competition, commencing on Thursday morning AEDT, represents a potentially pivotal opportunity for James to etch his name into the pantheon of Australia’s all-time greatest athletes. An Olympic gold medal is widely considered essential for him to join the ranks of legends like Ian Thorpe, Cathy Freeman, and Anna Meares.

However, the path to gold is far from straightforward. The men’s halfpipe field is exceptionally deep, featuring a formidable array of generational talent from Australia, Japan, China, Switzerland, and the United States. Despite the fierce competition, James is undeniably the current top dog. While metaphors like “king of the jungle” might spring to mind, the reality in snowboarding is that fierce rivals often share a strong sense of camaraderie.

Even amidst the intense pressure of the Winter Olympics, the athletes exhibit remarkable support for one another. They are driven by a shared desire to push the boundaries of the sport, even when it’s a rival leading the charge. To truly grasp the hierarchy within the snowboarding community, one only needs to observe a brief interaction following the first practice session in Livigno on Monday AEDT.

A Community United: The Snowboarder’s Circle

At the conclusion of a gruelling three-hour session, all athletes, both male and female, converge for a crucial meeting. Here, they collectively scrutinise the halfpipe’s condition and provide essential feedback to the venue staff responsible for its meticulous sculpting.

“We just had the meeting then about the pipe and we were all like, ‘Scotty, what do you think?'” reveals James’ Australian teammate, Emily Arthur, to Wide World of Sports and another Australian reporter. “He has a very big presence within the whole community, and it’s great having him around.”

This sentiment is echoed by Valentino Guseli, a 20-year-old teammate with whom James shares a close, almost brotherly bond. “The feedback today was the right wall needs a little bit less vert, the left wall needs a little bit more vert,” Guseli elaborates. “Scotty put that to him (the halfpipe sculptor), basically they started the course review and Scotty had already told him. Then everyone was like ‘what did Scotty say?’ And Scotty said what he said already and everyone agreed.”

This profound respect for James is evident in subtler ways too. For instance, upon completing a practice run and heading towards the chairlift that transports athletes back to the summit of the pipe, rivals have been observed deferring to him, allowing him to board first.

“He’s the man,” Guseli confirms with a grin. “He’s the man, for sure. He’s pretty gangster.” This dynamic is particularly fascinating for Guseli, a 20-year-old who also possesses the talent to contend for a gold medal.

The Australian Dream: Sacrifices and Aspirations

While much of Australia is eagerly anticipating James emulating the success of Jess Fox, who achieved Olympic gold at Paris 2024 to complement her dominance in her sport, Guseli finds himself in a unique position. He could potentially be the one to thwart James’ perfect career trajectory. This presents a complex situation for an Australian and a friend. Does he feel conflicted?

“He’s a great person. Obviously, in my position and in everyone else’s position, you want to just win, you know. That’s what we’re here for, we’re here to go for gold,” Guseli responds. “But as a person, he’s the man. As a snowboarder, I respect him very much. And I think it’s more about us going and kicking everyone else’s arses, and that’s a cool thing.”

Should both James and Guseli manage to secure podium finishes, it would represent an extraordinary triumph for Australians, overcoming significant odds in a sport that often necessitates young athletes leaving their families at an early age. Until recently, Australia lacked a full-sized training halfpipe, let alone a competition-standard facility. This very reason led to James’ departure from his close-knit family at just 13 years old, seeking out training and competition opportunities on a global scale that matched his burgeoning talent.

The teenage years, as depicted in the Netflix documentary, are a shared experience for many elite Australian snowboarders, including Arthur. She eloquently articulates the reasons behind the unprecedented wave of support for James heading into Milano Cortina.

“I cried a fair bit actually,” Arthur admits. “I think what he said about ‘it’s not just about you, it’s about your family, who’s given up so much for you’. I really resonated with that. My brother’s my coach, and he’s given up a lot to be here with me, and my parents. I resonated a lot with what he was saying about that. … I think it’s like the Australian story, though; you’ve got to leave when you’re a kid and you’ve got to give it your all from the get-go.”

Torah Bright paved the way by winning halfpipe gold at Vancouver 2010, breaking a significant barrier. Now, the stage is set for the first Australian man to join her in the history books.

“I think Scotty sort of thrives on the pressure,” Arthur observes, referencing his recent X Games gold medal performance, which featured a groundbreaking combination: a switch backside 1440 into a backside 1440. “I think there were some people maybe that were like, ‘I don’t know who’s going to win (gold at the Olympics),’ and then I think after X Games, people were like, ‘Oh, Scotty’s ripping. I think a lot of people weren’t expecting that one.’ At least from what I’ve heard people say, it’s a bit of a game-changer, that combo.”
