Duchess of York’s Pursuit of Lucrative Cunard Deal Revealed Amidst Plea to Epstein for Rent Money

Newly surfaced emails have shed light on a fascinating period in 2009 for Sarah Ferguson, the former Duchess of York. At a time when she was reportedly facing significant rent arrears, she was simultaneously pursuing a substantial endorsement deal with the luxury cruise line, Cunard. The correspondence suggests that Ferguson believed Cunard was prepared to offer her a lucrative arrangement, potentially worth $1 million annually, for her to travel on their vessels.

This pursuit of a high-profile commercial opportunity unfolded around the same time that Ferguson was privately seeking financial assistance from convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein to cover her overdue rent. Emails released as part of a recent tranche of Epstein’s files indicate Ferguson’s belief that Cunard would pay her a substantial $250,000 per cruise, with plans for her to undertake four such voyages per year.

David Stern, identified as a royal insider and intermediary, was actively engaged in trying to secure this deal for Ferguson. He reportedly made repeated attempts to connect with Cunard representatives on her behalf.

However, it appears that Cunard executives were attempting to distance themselves from these overtures in September 2009, a period when Ferguson’s financial difficulties were becoming a matter of public record.

Peter Shanks, who held the position of Cunard’s president at the time, eventually responded to Stern’s persistent inquiries in late October. While Shanks indicated that he had “enjoyed meeting” Ms. Ferguson, he clarified that the company did not typically offer financial remuneration for such endorsements. He explained Cunard’s practice of inviting “Insight Speakers” to join their luxury voyages, but stressed that this did not involve any “fee.” Instead, the company’s offering was limited to a complimentary cabin and the reimbursement of travel expenses.

Further emails suggest that Stern consulted with Epstein regarding Cunard’s position. In a communication dated October 26th, Stern relayed what he understood to be Ferguson’s understanding of the deal: “F. stated Cunard Line wants her to travel on their cruises, using this as endorsement and paying her US$ 250k per trip, 4 trips/year = 1m.”

However, Stern immediately contrasted this with the information received from Cunard’s president. He attached Shanks’ detailed response, which indicated a lack of “specific opportunities” for Ms. Ferguson. Shanks elaborated on Cunard’s operational model: “Our modus operandi is that we provide the stateroom and any travel arrangements, however we do not provide any form of fee for our Insight Speakers.”

The now-retired Shanks further suggested a potential avenue for funding, noting: “As I mentioned when meeting with the Duchess if we were able to find a third party…..then that would be a great opportunity as they could provide the necessary funding. The trick of course in the current marketplace is finding such a third-party benefactor.”

Cunard operates a fleet of opulent liners, offering a range of signature world cruises that traverse picturesque destinations, including Mediterranean ports and Caribbean islands.

A Cunard spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Mail that their former President and Managing Director’s account accurately reflected the company’s stance in 2009. They stated that “no commercial opportunities for Sarah Ferguson were ever made then or since.”

The attempts to finalise this substantial deal with Cunard occurred mere weeks after Ferguson reportedly emailed Epstein expressing an urgent need for £20,000 to cover her rent.

Despite her public persona as a businesswoman and philanthropist, the released emails suggest a pattern of Ferguson seeking advice and financial assistance from Epstein to manage her well-documented financial challenges.

While Ferguson had previously acknowledged receiving £15,000 from Epstein to settle debts, the newly uncovered documents imply that the extent of her borrowings may have been considerably greater.

In January 2010, even while Epstein was under house arrest following his arrest for child sex abuse charges, emails indicate that Ferguson was requesting loans as high as $100,000 to cover “small bills.”

Additional correspondence indicates that the late billionaire, who died in custody in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking, had confided in friends about financially supporting the former duchess for a period of 15 years.

Ferguson faced repercussions last year when several prominent charities severed ties with her, following the release of emails in September that revealed her ongoing close relationship with the disgraced financier.

A message from April 2011 shows Ferguson referring to Epstein as a “steadfast, generous and supreme friend” and offering a “humbly apologised” for publicly distancing herself from him under pressure. At the time, her spokesperson stated that this action was taken after she received a “chilling” phone call from Epstein, allegedly threatening legal action against her.
