Bulldog Champion Hangs Up Boots

James Harmes Hangs Up His Boots: Midfielder Calls Time on AFL Journey

Western Bulldogs midfielder James Harmes has officially announced his retirement from the Australian Football League, concluding a distinguished career spanning 174 games. The 2021 premiership player with the Melbourne Demons made the decision on Tuesday, following a period of personal leave taken at the commencement of the new year.

Harmes, who was in the third year of his contract with the Bulldogs, which was slated to conclude at the end of the current season, had been a full participant in training sessions prior to the Christmas break. However, the 30-year-old’s availability for the early stages of the upcoming campaign became uncertain after he stepped away from the club to attend to personal matters.

In a statement released by the club, Harmes expressed his rationale for the decision: “I feel like the time is right for me to step away from the game and focus on other areas of my life.” This declaration signals a shift in priorities for the experienced midfielder.

The Western Bulldogs now find themselves with an available spot on their playing list. This vacancy comes at a crucial time, with the pre-season supplemental period deadline set for March 2nd, offering the club an opportunity to recruit a new player.

Harmes’ tenure with the Bulldogs saw him play 22 games across two seasons in the red, white, and blue. He featured in 13 matches last year before his season was unfortunately cut short by illness. His move to the Bulldogs occurred at the conclusion of the 2023 season, a transition that followed a period where he had fallen out of favour with then-Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin.

Harmes’ AFL journey began when he was drafted by the Demons as a rookie in 2015. He successfully broke into the senior squad during Paul Roos’ final year as coach. He went on to become a significant contributor to Melbourne’s drought-breaking premiership victory in 2021, playing 18 games during that memorable season.

Over his career, Harmes played a total of 152 games for the Melbourne Football Club. Throughout his entire AFL career, he amassed a tally of 94 goals, showcasing his ability to impact the scoreboard. His departure marks the end of an era for the midfielder, who leaves behind a legacy of dedication and resilience on the field. The Bulldogs will now look to fill the void left by his retirement as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
