The rumour mill is churning as speculation mounts over the next batch of famous faces set to join the gripping reality series, The Celebrity Traitors. Following the immense success of its inaugural season, bosses are reportedly eyeing up a star-studded cast for the upcoming second series, promising even more drama, deception, and outright hilarity.
Filming is slated to commence in the picturesque Scottish Highlands in May, with the grand 19th-century Ardross Castle once again serving as the dramatic backdrop. Claudia Winkleman, 54, is confirmed to be returning as the enigmatic host, guiding a new group of celebrities through the ultimate game of trust and betrayal.
Among the names being bandied about is Irish comedian Joanne McNally, 42. Known for her sharp wit and relatable humour, McNally co-hosts the wildly popular podcast My Therapist Ghosted Me with her best friend Vogue Williams. Her extensive television appearances, including a strong second-place finish on Taskmaster Series 17, The Big Fat Quiz of Everything, and The Jonathan Ross Show, have cemented her status as a fan favourite.
A source close to the production suggested McNally’s appeal lies in her ability to connect with a broad demographic. “Joanne has a popular podcast and a substantial social media following, which will appeal to the younger viewers who, at one time, wouldn’t be religiously watching a mainstream show on the BBC,” they commented. “But people like Joanne are the bridge between old and new media. Plus, she’s hilarious, with a sense of humour based on the fact she’s a single woman navigating the dating world – something which also appeals to a younger market.”
Adding serious acting chops to the potential line-up are David Mitchell and Steve Pemberton. Pemberton, 58, the acclaimed star of The League of Gentlemen, is reportedly in advanced talks with producers. His public declaration of love for the show upon its 2022 launch is said to have caught the attention of the casting team.
An insider revealed, “Signing Steve would fill the slot for a celebrity who is obsessed with the mechanics behind the programme. It was a role filled last year by Jonathan Ross, who was a long-time devotee and became one of the programme’s ‘big dogs’. As an award-winning actor who can transform himself from one character to another, Steve would be a similar figure and a formidable contestant for the players to contend with.”
Another name generating buzz is Amanda Holden. After her close friend Alan Carr emerged victorious in the first series, Holden is rumoured to be keen to try her own hand at the game. However, her existing commitments could pose a significant challenge.
“Filming for The Celebrity Traitors takes place in the Scottish Highlands at the same time that BGT semi-finals are filmed live in London on a Saturday night,” a TV insider explained. “It’s not impossible for her to be given some time off, but it isn’t the only work she’d have to juggle.” Holden’s demanding schedule, which includes her role on Britain’s Got Talent and her radio presenting duties, would need careful negotiation.
Adding to the potential roster of talent is Alison Hammond, 51. The charismatic ITV presenter is reportedly in discussions with BBC bosses, who are convinced she would bring “comedy gold” to the series, much like Alan Carr did. A source indicated, “The Beeb thinks she could be comedy gold, just like Alan Carr. The pot of talent wanting to take part is overflowing, so they have a lot to weigh up.” While contracts are not expected to be finalised until later in the year, there’s a strong desire from the broadcaster to secure her participation.
Further rumours suggest that other high-profile personalities, including Danny Dyer and Gavin & Stacey star Ruth Jones, are also on the wishlist for the upcoming season.
A BBC representative stated, “We’re not commenting on speculation but details about series two of The Celebrity Traitors will be announced in due course.”
Since its debut in 2022, The Traitors has captivated audiences with its masterclass in psychological gameplay. The first celebrity edition saw comedian Alan Carr, 49, triumphantly remain undetected as a Traitor, walking away with the £87,500 prize. His victory was a testament to his cunning, as he successfully deceived fellow contestants Nick Mohammed, 45, and David Olusoga, 56, into believing he was a Faithful.
The grand finale drew an impressive average audience of 11.1 million viewers, with a peak of 12 million, making it the BBC’s most-watched overnight audience since the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special. The dramatic conclusion saw Carr outwit his fellow players, despite earlier claims of being a less adept Traitor than some of the original series’ participants. The final moments were particularly nail-biting, with Joe Marler, 35, correctly identifying Carr and Cat Burns, 25, as the remaining Traitors, only to be banished himself due to a last-minute twist where his fellow Faithfuls turned on him. The show’s ability to generate such intense speculation and viewer engagement is a clear indicator of its compelling format.
